University Social Responsibility Goals

As a responsible public institution, CUHK is committed to addressing society’s greatest challenges and contributing to the well-being of the global community. University social responsibility (USR) provides a set of values and principles that enable us to resolve and overcome the great challenges we face.

In our Strategic Plan 2021–2025 (‘CUHK 2025’), we declared our intention to position CUHK as a 21st-century civic university striving for excellence with a purpose and embracing social responsibility for sustainable development.  The university has demonstrated its commitment to USR by seeking an appropriate balance between social, economic and environmental considerations in the quest for sustainable development.

As we look towards the future, CUHK remains committed to nurturing great minds that will shine a light on the world’s grand challenges and make a positive impact on society.

USR Goal 1:

To improve public health through preventive healthcare research and outreach

USR Goal 2:

To increase equal access to and the impact of quality education through creativity and technology

USR Goal 3:

To promote diversity, inclusion and partnerships through understanding and respect

USR Goal 4:

To pursue climate action and commit to the ambition of carbon neutrality by 2038

USR Goal 5:

To advocate responsible processes by setting standards and creating scalable solutions

Universities have a responsibility to bring about sustainable development in society. They are expected to be responsive to pressing societal issues and sustainability challenges and to act to integrate changes in internal organization, knowledge creation, educational models, information technologies, social responsibility and knowledge transfer.

As one of Hong Kong’s pioneering universities, CUHK takes a holistic approach to social responsibility, connecting and articulating its vision, goals and priorities to guide planning and management practices. We are resolved to establish ourselves at the forefront of social responsibility and to address various sustainable development targets, ranging from health to education, inclusion to partnerships, and climate action to responsible processes.

The University seeks to ensure that all its members understand and identify with CUHK’s values and are engaged in the quest for a sustainable world both for themselves and for those who follow in their footsteps.
