Time Release for Community Service

For CUHK staff

The University has formalized the provision of time release for community service. Starting 1 November 2024, full-time staff members will be eligible for up to 15 hours of time release per academic year (from 1 August in a year to the following 31 July) to engage in community service activities.

This decision follows a successful initial run during CUHK’s 60th anniversary. The formalization of time release provision underscores CUHK’s commitment to University Social Responsibility (USR).

Administrative Guidelines:

To ensure smooth implementation, the provision is subject to specific administrative guidelines. These guidelines are now included in the online Staff Handbook under the section “Leave to Perform Public Duties and Time Release for Community Service.”

For more details, please refer to the Human Resources Circular No. 04/2024 and the Staff Handbook chapter retitled as “Leave to Perform Public Duties and Time Release for Community Service”.

We encourage all eligible staff to sign the CU60303 community service pledge, take advantage of this opportunity to contribute to our community, and uphold the spirit of service that defines CUHK.

Universities have a responsibility to bring about sustainable development in society. They are expected to be responsive to pressing societal issues and sustainability challenges and to act to integrate changes in internal organization, knowledge creation, educational models, information technologies, social responsibility and knowledge transfer.

As one of Hong Kong’s pioneering universities, CUHK takes a holistic approach to social responsibility, connecting and articulating its vision, goals and priorities to guide planning and management practices. We are resolved to establish ourselves at the forefront of social responsibility and to address various sustainable development targets, ranging from health to education, inclusion to partnerships, and climate action to responsible processes.

The University seeks to ensure that all its members understand and identify with CUHK’s values and are engaged in the quest for a sustainable world both for themselves and for those who follow in their footsteps.
