CUHK actively engages stakeholders at all levels in university matters.

In the highest governing bodies of the University, i.e. the Council and the Senate, there are members elected from among students (both undergraduate and graduate), faculty members and other staff of the University.  Local stakeholders external to the University, e.g.  Legislative Council members, also serve as members of CUHK’s Council, to offer advice on the University’s strategic direction.  The engagement and participation of local stakeholders in the Council is stipulated in Statute 11 of The Chinese University of Hong Kong Ordinance.

The governing bodies of the nine CUHK Colleges also engage local stakeholders, e.g. Board of Trustees of Chung Chi College and the Committees of Overseers of Morningside College.  A similar arrangement can be seen in most committees established under the Council.

The advisory boards and committees, composed of local community leaders and representatives, are established to provide guidance and advice on the development of the various university entities and functions.  Typical examples are the Advisory Board of Continuing and Professional Studies, and the Advisory Committee of the Art Museum.

Students are the key stakeholders of the university.  CUHK seeks to engage students in and ensure their participation in University’s decision-making process.  Statute 25 of The Chinese University of Hong Kong Ordinance provides for the establishment of CUHK’s student unions, including a University Students Union (Clause 7) and a Students Union for each College (Clause 8).  Various less formal student associations have also been formed on campus. Our students also participate in various University committees, including The Senate and the Committee on Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development, ensuring their voices are heard in university governance and management matters.

Diversity and inclusion are the core values of CUHK.  Our Principles of Community and Diversity and Inclusion Policy affirms all our members are entitled to enjoy their freedom of opinion and expression.  The University strives to create an open and neutral platform for students and staff to share their thoughts and opinion freely.  There are no panaceas in tackling sustainability challenges.  Only through discussions and collaborations can we find practical solutions to resolve sustainability challenges.  CUHK offers a safe place for university members to discuss and work together for a sustainable future for all humanity.

CUHK’s Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies provides an open, fair and neutral platform for different stakeholders to exchange on a range of social and political topics and challenges, such as social movements and equality.
